6 Refreshing Ways to Cool Off in Central Virginia

Summer heat showed up early this year, and when it gets muggy in Central Virginia, I start looking for any excuse to get near the water. Luckily, we’ve got plenty of spots to cool off without needing to hop on a plane or even drive too far. Whether you’re into paddling, floating, or just dipping your toes in, here are six ways to beat the heat right in our backyard.

1. Kayak the James River

One of my favorite ways to unwind is getting on the James River. Whether you’re paddling through quiet stretches or navigating a few light rapids, something is grounding about moving with the current. There are routes for every skill level, and the views, forest-lined banks, birds overhead, and the occasional heron never disappoint.

2. Tube the Shenandoah

Want something super low-key? Grab a tube and float down the Shenandoah River. It’s slow, scenic, and the kind of lazy summer day we all need once in a while. Just pack sunscreen, snacks, and maybe a waterproof speaker, and you’re good to go. Great for a group hang or a solo float.

3. Fish at Smith Mountain Lake

If fishing is more your speed, Smith Mountain Lake is a solid pick. With 500+ miles of shoreline, you’ll find plenty of peaceful spots to drop a line. Bass, catfish, trout, it’s got a bit of everything. Even if you don’t catch anything, just being out on the water is half the reward.

4. Paddleboard on Lake Anna

Lake Anna is perfect if you want to get out on the water without too much fuss. I love how peaceful paddle boarding feels, quiet, steady, and just challenging enough to keep you focused. Whether you’re exploring little coves or just practicing balance in the sun, it’s a refreshing way to spend a day.

5. Canoe at Douthat State Park

Douthat State Park is one of those hidden gems that’s worth the drive. Canoeing on Douthat Lake is so calm, surrounded by forested hills and the kind of stillness you don’t get in a lot of places. Bonus points if you spot deer or beavers along the shoreline while you’re out there.

6. Swim at Sherando Lake

When I really need a break from the heat, Sherando Lake is where I go. Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains, it has a beachy vibe with crystal-clear water and mountain views all around. Whether you’re splashing around or just laying out in the sun, it’s one of the best swimming spots in the area.

Central Virginia has no shortage of ways to cool off when summer turns up the heat. I’m always amazed by how many adventures are right here in my backyard.

Tried any of these? Got a favorite I didn’t mention? Let me know in the comments, I’m always looking for the next spot to explore.
