6 Outdoor Adventures You Can Have Right in Central Virginia’s Cities

You don’t always have to head deep into the woods to find fresh air and a little adventure. Some of the best outdoor moments I’ve had have been right in the middle of the city, those little escapes that remind you nature doesn’t have to be remote to be powerful. Here are six ways to have an outdoor adventure in Central Virginia’s cities when you need a quick hit of nature without going off-grid.

1. Ride the Virginia Capital Trail

If you’re into biking or just want to stretch your legs, the Virginia Capital Trail is a solid option. It runs over 50 miles between Richmond and Jamestown, and it’s fully paved, so it’s great for everything from casual cruising to a long-distance ride. I’ve jumped on it for both quick spins and all-day rides, it’s beautiful, well-kept, and full of history along the way. A gem if you like your exercise with a side of scenic views.

2. Picnic at Maymont

Maymont is one of those places that feels like stepping into a storybook. Waterfalls, gardens, shaded lawns, what more could you ask for? It’s perfect for an unhurried afternoon with snacks, a book, or just sitting still. And if you’ve got kids in tow, the wildlife center and petting zoo are always a hit. It’s peaceful, easy to get to, and a reminder that city life and nature can coexist.

3. Wander through Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

This one’s for when you need to slow down. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is full of surprises, lush greenhouses, winding paths, themed gardens, and plenty of benches to just sit and breathe. Whether you’re into plants or not, something is grounding about walking through here. It’s like a reset button for your nervous system.

4. Run (or Walk) the James River Park Trails

If you’re craving movement but want it paired with river views and the sound of water, the James River Park System delivers. There are paved stretches and rugged trails, so whether you’re running, hiking, or just meandering, you’ll find your groove. The views of the river are reason enough to go, and if you catch a sunrise or sunset while you’re out there? Pure magic.

5. Explore the Sculpture Garden at VMFA

Not your typical “hike,” but hear me out—the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Sculpture Garden is one of my favorite places to slow-walk and soak in something creative. It’s a mix of modern and classic art, surrounded by gardens and open space. Great for a casual wander, a quiet coffee break, or just some inspiration without screens or walls.

6. Birdwatch at Bryan Park

I never thought I’d get into birdwatching, but there’s something meditative about it. Bryan Park has this wonderful mix of wooded trails, open meadows, and little ponds—perfect for spotting all kinds of birds. Bring your binoculars or just your curiosity. It’s peaceful, it’s quiet, and you’ll likely leave feeling more grounded than when you arrived.

You don’t have to go far to get an outdoor adventure, as Central Virginia’s cities are full of pockets of nature just waiting to be explored. Whether you’re biking, birdwatching, or just lounging on a picnic blanket, something is healing about finding adventure right where you are.
